01Sort silver by product before you compare offers.
Group recognized bars and bullion coins separately from sterling jewellery, flatware, hollowware and potentially collectible coins. A standard bullion product can have a direct resale route, while mixed sterling may require more testing, preparation and refining.
Do not melt, clean or dismantle an item before its category is understood. Maker, pattern, condition, date, completeness or collectible demand can sometimes support value above recoverable silver.
- Photograph hallmarks, maker marks and both sides of coins.
- Keep capsules, tubes, assay packaging and receipts together.
- Record gross weight by category rather than one combined total.
- Flag knives, candlesticks and hollow handles as potentially weighted.
02Contained silver is a reference—not the final cash offer.
A contained-metal estimate begins with the CAD silver reference per gram, multiplied by eligible weight and verified purity. Gross weight can overstate eligible silver when an object includes blades, stainless components, stones, cement, resin or other fill.
The transaction price can also reflect authentication, assay, refining terms, lot size, payment method, market movement and the likely exit route. A useful offer record shows these layers instead of hiding them behind a single percentage-of-spot slogan.
03Verification should match the item and the risk.
A hallmark is evidence, not proof. A local verification process may combine visual inspection, an observable transaction weight, dimensions for recognized bullion, magnetic or conductivity screening, XRF or other product-appropriate methods. No single test answers every silver question.
Measurement Canada advises sellers to check the scale’s inspection sticker and request its latest inspection certificate. Ask to see the weighing result, the unit and the eligible weight used in the offer. A verified weight does not, by itself, establish silver purity or product value.
04Use the research before approaching a buyer.
Meridian’s CAD silver references, calculators and guides are available across British Columbia, with a focus on the Lower Mainland. Use them to prepare an item list, understand metal content and ask better questions about a buyer’s final amount.
