Hallmark, weight and purity begin the model
A 14K stamp commonly indicates 58.5% gold; 18K commonly indicates 75%. Multiply declared weight by purity and the CAD pure-gold value per gram to estimate contained metal. The result is a starting point, not an offer.
Hallmarks can be worn, altered or counterfeit. Solder, repairs, springs, stones and non-gold components can make gross weight different from eligible gold weight. A physical assessment must resolve those differences before a firm calculation is possible.
Scrap value and jewellery value are different lanes
Broken, generic or heavily worn pieces may be valued primarily for recoverable metal. A signed, antique or desirable wearable piece may have a secondary-market route above melt. Automatically treating every item as scrap can destroy value; automatically promising retail value can be equally misleading.
- Photograph hallmarks and maker marks.
- Keep receipts, boxes and certificates with signed pieces.
- Do not remove stones or aggressively clean the jewellery.
- Ask the buyer to identify the expected resale, wholesale or refining route.

Not by default. Removing stones can damage an item or destroy wearable value. Record gross weight and let an appropriate verifier identify eligible metal and non-gold components.
Can branded jewellery be worth more than melt?
Sometimes. Maker, design, condition, documentation and resale demand can matter. Wearable or signed pieces deserve an individual assessment.
