01

An assessment should clarify, not pressure

The purpose of a first assessment is to classify an item and make the calculation legible. It should establish what the item appears to be, the relevant weight and purity inputs, what remains uncertain and which value lane is appropriate. It is not a reason to rush a custody transfer.

For gold jewellery, bullion or coins, bring any invoices, assay cards, original packaging and information that helps distinguish a recognized product from a mixed item. Preserve objects as found; do not clean coins, dismantle jewellery or remove stones solely for an initial discussion.

02

Testing is selected for the item, not for theatre

Hallmark review, measured weight and dimensions, magnets, conductivity, density, acid tests and XRF all have different strengths and limits. A credible operator should explain which evidence is being used and when a result needs a second method, an assayer or a specialist review.

A customer should be able to distinguish declared inputs from verified findings. For material value, the relevant sequence is reference market context, measured and verified item data, then a separately explained commercial outcome.

03

Ownership, ID and payment are separate controls

In a real transaction, business identity, ownership confirmation, records, payment method and receipt requirements may all matter. FINTRAC publishes obligations and risk information applicable to dealers in precious metals and precious stones; the applicable requirements depend on the actual business activity and transaction.
