Refining begins with classification and assay

A refiner does not treat every incoming lot as though its gross weight were pure gold. Material is documented, sorted and sampled so its precious-metal content can be estimated. An assay establishes the composition used for processing and commercial settlement.

For a retail gold desk, this means the item-level test and the downstream refinery assay answer related but different questions. The first supports a purchase decision; the second reconciles what a mixed lot ultimately contained.

02

Melt, purification and electrolysis change the material

The Royal Canadian Mint describes a sequence that can include pre-melting, chemical purification, anode casting, electrolysis, assay testing and final casting. The exact route depends on the feed material and required purity.

Refining converts heterogeneous material into a standardized output such as high-purity bars or grain. It does not preserve a jewellery piece or collectible coin as a retail object, so those resale possibilities should be assessed before material enters a scrap stream.

03

Outturn and settlement are commercial controls

An outturn statement should reconcile the accepted lot, assay, recoverable metal, agreed charges and the metal or cash delivered back to the customer. Timing, minimum lot size, treatment of silver or other payable metals, and price-fixing terms can affect realized proceeds.

A dealer therefore needs more than a headline refining fee. It needs documented custody, representative sampling, lot reconciliation, exception handling and a settlement rule that can be compared with the original customer purchases.

04

When refining makes sense

Recognized bullion may be resold intact when authentication and market demand support it. Mixed scrap is more likely to be aggregated for refining. Wearable or branded jewellery may need a separate resale decision before either path is chosen.

Meridian does not offer refining services. If you are considering a refiner, compare the sampling method, payable-metal calculation, all charges and settlement timing before transferring material.
